The Publications mathématiques de l’IHES is an international journal publishing papers of highest scientific level. Thanks to its worldwide distribution (it can be found in the libraries of the major mathematical institutions in the world), to its tradition of publishing landmark articles and to its broad coverage of the discipline, it has won international recognition.
The Publications mathématiques de l’IHES was created in 1959 under the leadership of Léon Motchane, founder and director of the institute, and Jean Dieudonné, professor at the institute.
Issues were first published at irregular intervals and in four languages: French, English, German and Russian. Today, German and Russian are discontinued. Gradually, IHES published two annual volumes totalling 800 pages. Today, 80 copies of the journal have been printed. It is also available online and on Numdam.
Diamond open access model
Starting in 2026, the Publications Mathématiques de l'IHES will be published in diamond open access, free of charge for both authors (no publication fees) and readers (articles freely available without subscription, and reusable under the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license).
This diamond model is made possible thanks to the collaboration between IHES and the Centre Mersenne for Open Scientific Publishing.
And since 2021, the issues published between 1959 and 2020 in collaboration with Springer have also been made available in open access. The articles from these issues are reusable under the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0. license. The IHES warmly thanks the entire Springer Nature team, and in particular its Editorial Director, Mr. Marc Strauss, who made this republication possible.
The Publications mathématiques de l'IHES are available in open access on the Numdam website since the very first issue, published in 1959.
